Abstract Painting

This class will explore the historical precedence of abstract painting, reducing reality based imagery to its basic terms. Cubism, expressionism, abstract expressionism, minimalism and geometric abstraction will be covered. Students will work from the still-life and from items of their choice. Acrylic paint is the medium of choice, however students wishing to use oils will be permitted to do so.
The Potter's Wheel

Beginners and intermediate students alike will enjoy this opportunity to learn the basics using the potter's wheel. A focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail will aid in merging art and function as students develop new techniques and refine existing skills on the wheel. Demonstrations of throwing techniques, as well as more complex alterations and surface treatments will show students the endless and creative possibilities ceramics has to offer.
Embracing Sculpture

This class will explore form rather than function. While running the gamut of ceramic techniques, each student will create original pieces based on their own aesthetic impulses. We will learn how to address the structure behind form, and how to manipulate the material into a method of three dimensional expression. All levels of experience are welcome.

In this landscape painting class you will paint outdoors and on location at the historic Kimball-Jenkins School of Art campus. From our formal gardens to the Victorian architecture, this elegant estate provides an ideal subject from which to learn the tradition of landscape oils. Either traditional or water-mixable oil paints may be used and the structure of the course can accommodate all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.

This class is for people who can't draw a straight line! Through the fundamentals of drawing, students will learn to observe carefully and draw with confidence. For beginners as well as those wanting to improve their skills, this course emphasizes line, gesture, proportion, perspective, mass, volume, value and shading. Students will study still life, the figure and subjects of individual choice, while working with black, white and color drawing mediums. This course will provide a solid foundation in the mechanics and expressive qualities of drawing.
Acrylic Painting from Photographs

Introduction to Black and White Photography

Take control of your pictures! This course completely covers the operation of 35mm cameras, film developing and darkroom printing. Students will learn composition, lighting, selective focus and speed shooting. As a student you will learn how to print and present black and white photographs. A 35mm camera with manual options is required.
The Art of Jewelry Making

This introduction to jewelry making teaches basic beading techniques such as single and triple strand with various beads, gemstones and crystals. Design and create decorative findings, ear wires and clasps. Students will learn to make stunning, wearable pieces with decorative papers, fibers and polymer clay. As the class progresses, bending and hammering sterling, copper, brass and colored wire in various diameters, will be taught, and the finished piece can be embellished with gems.
