This class will introduce you to what have been considered the “great works” throughout history and examine what it is that makes them so special. We’ll also look at a lot of other work by artists who you might enjoy even more!

Throughout our exploration, you will learn how art works are a product of the economic, cultural, social, political and religious beliefs and practices of their time. And we’ll look at a few groundbreaking works of art that had a tremendous impact on art and culture. This class is designed for those who always wished they had taken an art history class, or that they had paid more attention in art history class, or for those who want to feel a bit more comfortable walking through a museum.

This is a discussion-based class. There are no projects or homework associated with this class, but optional readings will be assigned.

Inez McDermott is Professor Emerita of art history at New England College. She is a curator of art and history exhibitions at various museums and galleries throughout New England including, in 2023, An Enduring Presence: The Old Man of the Mountain at the Museum of the White Mountains at Plymouth State University. In 2016, she was co-curator of Mount Washington, The Crown of New England at the Currier Museum of Art. Inez continues to lecture on art and history topics through New Hampshire Humanities “Humanities to Go” program, as well as teaching short courses for LINEC and Osher.

There are no supplies needed for this class, but students are encouraged to bring a notebook and pencil if notetaking helps with their learning process.
