Drawing Studio, Yellow House

Thoughtfully led by Kimball Jenkins’ 2024 Artist-in-Residence Jozimar Matimano, this one-day drawing workshop will help guide students on how to approach a portrait via drawing in a unique way that can enhance your artistic process and build critical skills. Jozimar will teach students how to best prepare a canvas or paper, how to plan out your materials before starting a project, how to sharpen pencils, what to use during your drawing process, how to tell when to stop working on a piece, and how to properly clean and store your materials.

Kimball Jenkins’ 2024 Artist-in-Residence Jozimar Matimano is a fine art painter based in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was born in the East Democratic Republic of Congo, Butembo, where he grew up and moved to Uganda at age ten. Since he was a boy, Jozimar has been interested in drawing and illustration.

On October 5, 2016, Jozimar moved from Uganda to Manchester New Hampshire as a refugee through the International Institute of New England program. In 2018, he began painting in his free time as a way to express himself, but it wasn’t until a year later that he realized he had a voice with stories worth telling in his paintings. Jozimar holds a Bachelor’s in Fine Art from the Institute of Art at New England College.

Jozimar uses portraiture to express his view of what was happening in society. In the future, he hopes to share his artwork with more people and see the impact that his art can have on other people and society.
